Across the world, the threat of COVID-19 has locked down millions of people in their houses with limitations of going outside whenever they want. Social distancing is a great method of preventing the spread of the virus. However, self-isolation also comes with a variety of negative consequences: boredom, depression, minimized outdoor exercise, and most significantly loneliness. Just because we are self-distancing doesn’t mean we can’t stay in touch with other people.
As a human being, we are born to socialize, which makes this quarantine especially difficult for many. However, social distancing is required to slow down the pandemic.
Then how do we stay safe but also sane during this crazy time? There are multiple ways to combat loneliness and isolation, and all it takes is a little creativity. For example, we can use technology to stay together and connect with others in a special way. Participate in online exchanges with your friends or even other people you haven’t met before. Apps like Zoom,
Houseparty, or even the original Facetime and texting app can be used to continue communication with people. You can play online games such as GamePigeon and have dinner with your friends over the phone or choose to stay in touch with teachers through optional Zoom meetings. You can also host game nights, virtual club meetings, karaoke meetups, and distance parties to continue socializing with friends.
If you are not very familiar with technology or just want to take advantage of nice weather, try to go outside for once and take a walk around your neighborhood. Fresh air, wind, and nature might refrain you from feeling isolated and lonely. Just by looking at people who are also spending their time outside with the same reason as yours, you can still feel interacted with others. Also, as long as you keep 6 feet away from human beings, you can socialize and meet with people who are walking.
This is a troubling time for everyone so let’s make sure we take care of ourselves, both mentally and physically. Even though it’s very tough to keep in touch with people in-person, there are ways we can still socialize by using technology or taking a nice walk outside so we don’t feel isolated and depressed during the quarantine. If we follow these simple steps and prevent the spread of COVID-19, we can enjoy our company once again very soon.
