Throughout the entertainment industry, there has been many issues regarding sexual harassment from male directors and actors and gender discrimination. However, such intolerable actions have gone unacknowledged for years.

In order to bring this issue to light, a movement was started as a way to stand up against the sexual misconduct and gender discrimination making the 75th annual Golden Globes Awards unlike any other. During the Golden Globes, many of the stars had come together by attending in an all black outfit. The one color fashion had been to show a sign of solidarity for the victims. However, there were a select few who stood out from the “blackout” of the crowd as they had chosen to come in color. Of the few, one of them had been Meher Tatna. Tatna had been the head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hosted the Golden Globes. Instead of wearing all black, she had decided to wear an embroidered red dress. Although many have criticized her for her chose in attire, Tatna seemed to have a valid reason behind doing so.

Meher Tatna had stated that her reason for not wearing all black had been for cultural reasons as people in India didn’t wear all black during a celebration. Not only that, but she had stated how the dress she had worn had been something that she had chosen months before the event with her mother. She didn’t want to disappoint her mother who would be watching the show in Mumbai. In addition to the choice of dress being due to personal reasons, Tatna had also announced that even though she had worn something that contrasted from the all black fashion, she was still in support of the reasons behind the “blackout” as she had voiced her support of the movement a few days before the Golden Globes. Not to mention, that as a sign of support she had worn the #TimesUp pin during the Golden Globes. During the event, she had also expressed her opinion on the movement as she stated, “I am really glad that women are finally feeling safe enough to come forward and talk about their experiences. I am totally in solidarity with them.” (Duan) There are several who support Tatna’s opinion as a classmate had stated, “She still welcomed the idea of women wearing black as a statement, so I don’t see anything wrong with her finding it auspicious to wear black at an event if that’s what she truly believes.” There was another who had even mentioned, “I say her choice to represent her cultural pride is just as valid as it is to bring attention to the sexual harassment problems that stain society.” As shown by the two interviewed, even though there may be criticizers, there are also those who are in support of Tatna’s reasons for her action.

Overall, Meher Tatna might not have showed her support through her choice of attire, but she had fully shown it through her choice of words.
