The price of gas at the pump has tumbled since midsummer. Unemployment has fallen to its lowest level in more than five years. On Wall Street, the widely followed Dow Jones industrial index has finally returned to its glory days of the late 1990s, setting records almost daily. 원유 가격이 한여름 이후 크게 떨어졌고 실업률은 5년여 만에 가장 낮은 수준으로 내려갔다. 증권가에서는 널리 주시의 대상이 되고 있는 다우 존스 산업지수가 거의 매일 같이 기록을 갱신하면서 1990년대 말 호황기의 영광을 되 찾았다.
President Bush, in hopes of winning credit for his party’s stewardship of the economy, is spending two days this week campaigning on the theme that the economy is purring. “No question that a strong economy is going to help our candidates,” Bush said in a CNBC interview Monday, “primarily because they have got something to run on, they can say our economy’s good because I voted for tax relief.” 부시 대통령은 여당이 경제를 잘 관리하여 경기가 호전된 것으로 보고 점수를 얻기를 바라면서 경제가 만족스러운 방향으로 가고 있다는 주제를 가지고 이번 주 이틀간 선거운동에 나설 예정이다. 부시 대통령은 23일 CNBC와 가진 인터뷰에서 “호황이 공화당 후보에 유리하게 작용할 것이라는 데는 의심의 여지가 없다. 후보들은 내세울 것이 있고, 그들은 내가 세금을 줄이는 길을 택했기 때문에 경제가 좋아졌다고 말할 수 있게 되었다”고 말했다.
But Republican candidates do not seem to be getting any traction from the glowing economic statistics with midterm elections just two weeks away. 하지만 중간 선거가 이제 2주 밖에 남지 않은 상황에서 공화당 후보들은 이처럼 밝은 지표를 나타내는 경제 통계 수치의 혜택을 별로 입지 못하고 있는 것으로 보인다.
The economy is virtually nowhere to be found among the campaign ads of embattled Republican incumbents fighting to hold onto their House or Senate seats. Nor is it showing up as a strong weapon in the arsenal of Republican governors defending their job.
이러한 경제 지표는 이번 선거에서 재선되기 위해 격전을 벌이고 있는 공화당의 현직 하원 및 상원 의원들의 선거 광고 어디에서도 찾아 보기 힘들다. 또 재선을 노리는 공화당 주지사의 선거 홍보전에서도 강력한 무기로 등장하지 않고 있다.
“I don’t know of another election cycle in which the economy was so good, yet the election prospects for the incumbent party looked so bad,” said Frank Luntz, a Republican strategist. “If something goes wrong, Republicans are to blame. If something goes right, Republicans don’t get credit.”
공화당의 한 전략가인 프랭크 런츠 (Frank Luntz)는 “이처럼 경기가 호조를 보인 선거기간이 없었던 것 같지만 공화당의 선거 전망은 매우 좋지 않다. 일이 잘못 돌아가면 책임은 공화당이 지게 되어있고, 일이 잘 돌아가도 공화당이 잘해서 그랬다는 인정을 받지 못하고 있다” 고 말했다.
