Deborah Borda, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, has announced the appointment of Edward Yim to the position of Director of Artistic Planning. Yim, a native Angeleno who has served as the Artistic Administrator for overseeing and coordinating the programming for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, including the orchestra’s concerts, presentation series, and the Hollywood Bowl summer series.
Borda commented, “It gives me great pleasure to welcome Ed Yim as our Director of Artistic Planning. His experience with other great American orchestras in Cleveland and Philadelphia gives him the ideal portfolio. His will be a vital role as the Los Angeles Philharmonic moves to its new home in the Walt Disney Concert Hall. I look forward to welcoming him home to Los Angeles.”
Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen adds, “Mr. Yim will be an outstanding addition to the Philharmonic team. His experience and knowledge are assets that will help our orchestra plan ahead as we look towards Disney Hall, and I look forward to working with him.”
“I’m very pleased to be returning to my hometown and the orchestra with which I grew up. This is a very exciting time in the orchestra’s life, especially with Disney Hall quickly approaching. Also, I have the greatest admiration for Esa-Pekka Salonen, Deborah Borda, and the rest of the Philharmonic team. All of these elements make the Los Angeles Philharmonic exactly where I want to be.” Said Yim.
Yim has served as Artistic Administrator for The Cleveland Orchestra since 1995. During that time, he has been responsible for the engagement of guest soloists and conductors for concerts at Severance Hall and the Blossom Music Festival, as well as programming, new music commissioning, and the pre-concert lecture series. During his tenure there, he was also responsible for several highly successful projects, including the programming for the reopening of Severance Hall following its renovation; the creation of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Day of Music, a public open house that saw 20,000 visitors; and the first set of residencies for the Young Composer Fellowship, with community activities and supporting artistic activities.
Prior to his work in Cleveland, Yim served as Artistic Coordinator for The Philadelphia Orchestra for several years, where he also worked in the areas of labor negotiations and operations, in addition to artistic administration.
In 1991, Ed Yim was selected as a Management Fellow in the American Symphony Orchestra League’s highly competitive orchestra management training program, where he spent a year on assignments with the Baltimore Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Yim holds a BA in Government from Harvard and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University.
