A restaurant in Washington, DC, has sparked debate by restricting entry to individuals under 30 during evening hours.

Dubbed the American version of a "No Kids Zone," the Mediterranean restaurant "Cafe 8" in the Capitol Hill area has implemented this policy to reduce noise in its residential neighborhood and ensure a comfortable dining environment, according to the establishment. However, critics argue that the policy violates anti-discrimination laws.

The Washington Post reported on the 17th that Cafe 8 began enforcing the age restriction on August 27, as announced on its Instagram page. After 8:30 PM, only patrons aged 30 and above are allowed entry. The restaurant owner, Elif Sam, explained that the measure was necessary to address issues such as loud music from cars and disruptive parties held outside the restaurant.

Sam also cited personal incidents influencing the decision, including an assault on his father by teenagers near the restaurant a few months ago and an attempted entry by armed young men last month.

Sam expressed hope that older patrons, who are "easier to communicate with and less likely to cause trouble," would help create a quieter atmosphere.

Reactions from customers were mixed. Some welcomed the rule with comments like "Finally!" and "An adults-only space! I love it!" Others expressed frustration, with one person lamenting, "How am I supposed to wait until 2026 when I turn 30?"

Legal experts have raised concerns about the policy's compliance with Washington DC's anti-discrimination laws, which prohibit age-based discrimination. Andrew Kline, a local attorney specializing in restaurant-related cases, warned that the restriction might not hold up legally. While laws allow exceptions to prevent underage drinking by restricting entry to those under 21, banning individuals over 21 could pose legal challenges.

Sam, however, noted that he consulted with local advisory boards and law enforcement beforehand and received no objections. He emphasized that as a private business, he has the right to set rules, adding that the age limit is more of a "preference" and exceptions are made for under-30 patrons dining with older family or friends.

The Washington DC police confirmed they have not issued any formal recommendations on the policy, while the city's Office of Human Rights stated that they do not provide legal interpretations of individual cases. However, they noted that while denying service based on age is generally prohibited, exceptions can be made when necessary for effective business operations.
