The long-awaited People Mover, an automated light rail system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), has begun test operations. Expected to alleviate traffic congestion at terminal access points, the system aims to make LAX a more accessible and efficient international airport.

The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) announced that the $3 billion LAX People Mover project is nearing completion, with test runs on the actual tracks starting last week. LAWA confirmed that the official launch for passenger service is set for January 2026. Throughout 2025, the People Mover will undergo extensive testing, gradually increasing its operational speed before officially transporting passengers in 2026.

The LAX People Mover project is a cornerstone of the airport's $5.5 billion modernization program. Spanning a 2.2-mile route, it includes six stations connecting key terminals within the airport and transit hubs outside. Outside the airport, the system will link with the already completed Intermodal Transportation Facility (ITF), the Metro K Line's Crenshaw-LAX station, and the soon-to-be-finished Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility.

During peak hours, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, nine four-car trains will operate bi-directionally every two minutes. Each car, equipped with 12 seats, can carry up to 50 passengers with luggage, allowing a total of 200 passengers per train. The automated system will run at a speed of up to 47 miles per hour, completing the journey from the starting station to the last station in 10 minutes. Operating 24/7, the service will be free for all airport visitors.

Once fully operational, the People Mover is expected to transport 30 million passengers annually. Travelers and local residents will no longer need to drive directly to the terminal access roads. Instead, they can use the People Mover to travel between terminals and key airport locations, such as the rental car center, dramatically reducing vehicle congestion. LAWA estimates a reduction of 117,000 miles of vehicle travel per day.

In addition to easing traffic, the electric-powered automated rail system is anticipated to significantly cut carbon emissions in the airport area. By offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to car travel, the People Mover is set to enhance both the environmental and logistical aspects of accessing LAX.
