▶ Korean Automakers Continue Strong Performance, Attracting Customers During Summer Vacation Season
▶ Green Vehicles and SUVs Drive Sales
Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have seen a strong rebound in their August sales in the U.S. despite the traditionally slow summer vacation period. The surge in sales is attributed to the strong performance of eco-friendly and new vehicles.
Hyundai Motor America (HMA) reported that its U.S. sales in August reached 79,278 units, a 22% increase from 65,046 units in the same month last year. Notably, the Santa Fe Hybrid (HEV) saw a 120% increase in sales compared to the previous year, followed by the Palisade (84%↑), Ioniq 5 (35%↑), and Tucson (14%↑), all recording their highest August sales ever. Overall, hybrid vehicle sales increased by 49% year-over-year, driving the overall performance. In retail sales, electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles made up 25% of the total. Sales of hybrid vehicles increased by 81% compared to last year, while electric vehicle sales rose by 27% due to the boost from the Ioniq 5. The Tucson Hybrid (HEV) (113%↑) and Palisade (65%↑) also showed notable growth in the retail market.
Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, said, "August was a record-setting month in both total sales and retail sales. Our entire lineup performed exceptionally well, and the retail mix of hybrid products increased by 81% compared to last year, leading the market."
Kia America (KA) reported selling 75,217 units in August, setting a new monthly sales record. This represents a 4.25% increase from 72,147 units in the same month last year. The launch of the new EV9 led to a 27% increase in electric vehicle sales, and sales of hybrid (PHEV) models grew by 43%. This contributed to a 9% increase in total electrified model sales, solidifying Kia’s position as a leading brand in electrification. Additionally, utility model sales increased by 9% year-over-year, demonstrating the continued popularity of Kia's utility vehicles.
Utility models accounted for 75% of total sales, while electrified models made up 18%. Notably, Kia’s four models—Seltos (30%↑), Sportage (23%↑), Telluride (5%↑), and Forte (13%↑)—set new August sales records, driving overall sales growth.
Eric Watson, Vice President of Sales at Kia America, stated, "Kia achieved record monthly consumer sales through inventory management and enhanced marketing and sales activities. We expect to maintain sales momentum in the second half of the year with the introduction of popular models like the K5 and Carnival Hybrid, and the launch of the all-new K4."
Genesis Motor America (GMA) announced that its August sales totaled 7,386 units, a 15% increase compared to the same month last year, setting a new monthly sales record. In August, sales of SUVs accounted for 78.8% of total sales, with the GV70 setting a new monthly sales record.
GMA is focusing on diversifying its vehicle lineup, offering nine gasoline and electric models. The new GV80 Coupe, which started selling in June, saw 224 units sold in August. Among the models, the GV70 sold the most at 3,005 units, followed by the GV80 with 2,120 units and the G70 with 1,055 units, making up 83.6% of total sales.
