Thank you everyone for coming. Thank you to my grandparents who came all the way from Korea immediately after we gave them the notice. Thank you to my aunts, uncles and cousins who came from Philadelphia and Las Vegas this weekend. My mother and I can see how much love my father gave each and every one of you. He has always told me that he did not have many friends, but because he gave so much love to many people, all of you became our family.
Here are some things my father loved. He loved cars, loved the Los Angeles Lakers, loved the Los Angeles Dodgers, loved laughing and making other people laugh, loved singing, loved his family, loved church, loved God, and loved serving others. Here are some memories.
What I have heard is that many fathers do not take his sons or daughters to many sports games, but because of my father’s love of sports, I have gone to many Lakers and Dodgers games with him. My favorite Lakers game I went with my father was the playoff game with the Lakers and Dallas Mavericks when Kobe Bryant got his MVP award. I clearly remember shouting so loud that I lost my voice even before the game started. My favorite memory about the Dodgers is my father acting like the Dodgers manager. Los Angeles Dodgers former manager Don Manningly was a horrible manager. During his season with the Dodgers, my father would yell at the TV like he is yelling at Don Manningly. He would make all the better decision for the team than the manager would ever do. My father gave me the loving heart of sports. My mother when I was young would get mad that the house is so loud because my father and I would either be cheering loudly or be yelling loudly. We had lots of laughter, conversations about how good or bad coaches and players were and cheerful hearts from our living room to Staples Center or Dodger Stadium.
My father was all about comedy. He had many jokes on the grasp of his hand, and he loved to make other people laugh and have fun. Many kids in my generation learned Korean through Korean Drama by falling in love with Korean actors and actresses. However, because my father loved comedy, I learned Korean through a comedy show called “Gag Concert”. Remembering all the jokes from the show and using them on occasions that is perfect to use. For example, if I ask my father what he is doing, then father would respond with “궁금해요? 궁금하면 500원.” We would laugh so hard every time we do this to each other. Another example, if one of us corrects each other, we respond with “고래” I am going to miss all those laughter and jokes because it was very easy to lift up his spirit on a daily basis.
