Today, our society has a generalization that the only people who need a mentor are those in college or those just starting a business. Because of this, children are losing their interest in getting a mentor. Several researches show that children with a mentor are much more successful in life or at school. However, according to The Mentoring Effect, a research carried out by Mary Bruce and John Bridgeland, shows that about 16 million of children between the age of eight and eighteen are not getting mentored.
Mentors are exceptionally important for children since they are in their development stage. They provide all the necessary qualities that children need such as guidance, support, and encouragement. Additionally, mentors give children multiple benefits: Research shows that a child with a mentor are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. This shows that children are able to better decision in life with someone guiding them.
The development stage is also when children are learning about their passion and interests. Mentors can also provide them deeper knowledge about the subject or insight on their experiences. These factors will greatly encourage children to stay on the right path in order to pursue their goals. Furthermore, mentors will help children to reach their full potential.
Parents might argue that their kids do not need a mentor since they are their child’s guidance. I agree- parents are our first mentors of our lives. However, one perspective and guidance is not enough to become successful in life or school career. Also parents could become a huge distraction or limitation when children are trying to achieve a goal that their parents do not agree with.
While some schools offer mentoring programs for children, many schools do not offer them. If your school does not offer any mentorship program, then it must be your responsibility to look for a mentor. School teachers, high school student, or college student (depending on your education level) could be easily turned into a mentor. However, you might not find the right mentor right away, so I encourage you to contact and meet up with multiple mentors. After you find your mentor, do not forget to thank them for their advises and time.
