“My vote doesn’t matter.” This is the thought that pervades young minds who are eligible to vote. It is common knowledge by now that young people are voting less and less compared to older generations. Voter turnouts in America have hit an all-time-low. Young people have voted less in recent years than older folks because of the belief that their single votes do not affect the outcome of the election. This is true in the sense that the chance of an election decided by a single vote is highly unlikely, but the problem is, a significant amount of eligible people are not voting because all of these particular people believe that their one vote does not matter. Yet, who knows how different elections might turn out to be if every eligible individual casted his or her vote? While one single vote may not determine the results of an election, voting still does matter. If everyone had the “my vote doesn’t matter”mentality, the whole election couldn’t be properly processed. The issue is, too many people think that their vote won’t make a difference even though they know who to vote for. Not saying that everyone absolutely needs to vote because they don’t have to if they truly do not know who they should vote for. What I mean is that even though one person’s vote may not change results, there is not really another way for that person’s voice to be heard. Sure, it is difficult to be heard in a crowd of three hundred million people, but not speaking out at all ensures that one’s voice will never be heard. Some say that they don’t want to vote for “the lesser of two evils”but not voting at all will give the “greater of two evils” an advantage. Democracy allows voting to be driven by the people, so we should take advantage of the platform. Not everyone has to vote, especially when some people can’t decide on a firm decision. But if one does know whom to vote for, then one should do so. Every vote counts. After all, it determines who and what controls our country to make society a better place for the citizens of America.
