동부 밸리지역의 많은 공립학교들의 ▲읽기 ▲언어 ▲수학 실력이 전반적으로 전국 평균을 상회한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

이와 같은 사실은 최근 발표된 스탠포드 9 학력고사(Stanford 9 Achievement Tests) 결과에서 밝혀졌으며 동부 밸리지역 학군(▲아파치 정션 연합 ▲챈들러 연합 ▲길벗 연합 ▲히그리 국교 ▲Kyrene 국교 ▲메사 연합 ▲퀸크릭 연합 ▲템피 국교 ▲템피 유니언 고교 ▲동부 밸리 차터스쿨)의 많은 공립학교들은 읽기와 언어, 그리고 수학 가운데 특히 수학에서 놀랄 만한 점수를 획득한 반면 읽기와 언어는 좀더 노력을 해야 하는 것으로 평가받았다.

이 학력고사에는 애리조나주의 65만명의 학생이 응시했으며 수학의 주평균은 전학년이 백분위수의 60번째를 차지, 절반 이상의 학생이 전국 평균성적(백분위수의 50) 보다 나은 점수를 받은 것으로 나타났다.

한편 읽기는 42에서 54번째, 언어는 40에서 54번째를 각각 차지했다. 동부 밸리지역의 학군과 차터스쿨 가운데 메사의 프랭크린 노스이스트 국교를 비롯 ▲Kyrene Aprende Middle School ▲Tempe Preparatory Academy ▲챈들러의 Bright Beginning’s Charter School ▲길벗·메사·퀸크릭의 Benjamin Franklin Charter Schools 등은 백분위수의 80번째를 초과하는 높은 점수로 절찬을 받고 있다.

스탠포드 9 학력고사 결과 발표를 며칠 앞두고 주택매매가 관망세로 돌아섰을 정도로 학부모들이 자녀들의 학교에 대해 갖고 있는 관심도는 높았는데 이에 대해 한 관계자는 점수만으로 학교를 판단하는 것은 조심해야 한다고 말했다.

그 관계자는 점수는 학교를 결정하는데 있어 믿을 만한 것이 못되며 무엇보다도 바람직한 것은 학부모들이 직접 학교를 방문, 눈으로 확인하고 관찰하는 것이라고 말했다.
