한인사회의 정치력 신장과 권익옹호, 또 지도자 양성을 위한 목적으로 유권자 등록운동에 앞장선 한미위원회(KAC)가 짧은 기간이지만 500여 한인 유권자 등록을 이룬 것은 그들의 순수한 열정의 발로였다.
그러나 이 유권자 등록운동에 참여한 KAC 관계자들은 이에 만족하지 않고 투표장으로 한인들을 유도하기 위해 조기투표 일정과 장소를 발표, 투표권을 행사하도록 권유하고 있다.
KAC 관계자들은 “이번 선거를 통해 한인 모두가 당당한 미국시민으로서 투표에 참여하는 길만이 우리 한인들이 또 다른 이민 100주년을 여는 계기가 될 것이라며 “나 하나 투표하지 않는다고 무슨 일이 생기겠느냐는 안이한 생각을, 나 한사람이 투표장에 나가지 않음으로서 우리 미주 한인들의 권익을 잃게 된다고 생각하라고 권고하고 있다.
우리는 지난 100년을 이 땅에 이방인으로 살아왔으나 이제는 이 땅의 주인으로서 그 권리를 행사하자는 것이 KAC가 투표참여를 권장하는 이유이다.
KAC는 조기투표가 시작되는 오는 18일 정례회의를 가지며 11월10일에는 미 아시안 태평양 변호사협회 연례 컨벤션에 참석하고, 11월 중 파산/세법 문제 세미나를 개최한다.
